Never Put These 5 Common Food Items down Your Kitchen Sink

clogged kitchen sink drain dallas metroIt's pretty universally well-known by now: Never put fats and oils down your kitchen sink, or you'll find yourself grappling with a major clog. But there are many other, perhaps less-well-known food items you should just as vehemently avoid putting down your kitchen sink.

If you find yourself at a loss as to what those other forbidden foods are, then do yourself a favor and read through the rest of this article. It could save you a bit of headache (and expense) as you avoid a clogged kitchen sink by being sure to never put the following items down it:

Coffee Grounds

If you're like many adults, then you can't even begin to function in the morning until you've had your coffee. But your kitchen sink isn't as dependent upon that magical bean as you are. Indeed, coffee grounds can clump together and cause some pretty significant clogs in your kitchen drain, so you'll find coffee to be the WORST thing to give your sink in the morning -- or any time, for that matter.

Eggshells

We've all heard the old at-home remedy: Eggshells in the disposal will knock unpleasant odors right out. Gives you something to do with those shells after breakfast, right? Wrong. While eggshells won't directly cause a clog, they can dull your disposal's blades, making it unable to properly break down foods that can actually become clogs.

Flour

Have you ever made paper mache with your kids? If you have, then you know what happens when flour meets water: It turns to paste. And what does paste do? It causes things to stick to it. So, if you put flour down your drain, it could become a paste that will trap other food particles in its wake, causing a major clog. Instead, opt for the trash for your flour.

Seeds

When they're not feeding us, seeds perform one primary function: to make plants grow. And what helps plants to grow nice and big? Water -- which there is an abundance of in your kitchen sink's drain. So, you'll want to avoid dropping seeds down the drain, lest some get stuck and create a miniature forest that will cost a very much NOT miniature price to level.

Pasta

Starches are as bad for your kitchen sink as they are for you. After all, if you put pasta and rice down the sink, they could continue to swell and become a thick, gunky mess. You may not be able to avoid spaghetti night in your household, but at least try to avoid putting that spaghetti down the drain. Call our residential drain cleaning experts today!
